Our Seeding Options
Maintenance Seeding
Maintenance Seeding is perfect for introducing newer grass genetics and improving lawn density. It involves spreading new grass seed across your existing lawn, and dragging it in with a drag mat.
Best for lawns that are generally in good condition, but may benefit from newer genetics or are just beginning to lose density and show signs of thinning.
Renovation Seeding
Renovation seeding is ideal for lawns that have bare exposed soil areas or have been neglected for years. This process involves breaking up the soil through aggressive core aeration and incorporating seed into the soil.
Best for lawns that have bare exposed soil in areas or very thin and sparse. Often lawns with a significant amount of shade are great candidates for Renovation Seeding.
Need a recommendation on which seeding service is best for you?
Send a photo via text or email to our office and our agronomist will assess your lawn and recommend which seeding service is best for your lawn. For the best recommendation, take a few photos from different angles from a standing height of your worst areas and include photos of your entire lawn. 3-5 photos is ideal.

Answers to frequently asked questions about seeding
When is the best time of year to seed?
In Minnesota and Wisconsin, the best time of year to seed is Mid-August through September. If you miss this window, the second best time of year to seed is in November after soil temperatures drop.
Can I seed in the spring?
You can seed in the spring, but expect more weeds. Late May or Early June are the best times in the spring to seed. Avoid seeding in April or early May as cold soils typically lead to seed rot.
Why is the fall the best time to seed?
Seeding in the fall is the best time of year because soils are warm for quick germination and weed competition is lower.
What is dormant seeding?
Dormant seeding is planting seed in November once soils have cooled to the point that the seed will not germinate after planting. Dormant seedings will germinate the following spring after snow melt. This process is ideal when watering new seedlings is difficult or you missed the early fall seeding window.
What should you expect from a Renovation seeding?
Renovation seeding is an intensive process that involves disrupting the soil surface to incorporate seed into the soil. Because of this, the lawn may look worse initially. With adequate watering and minimal traffic, in 2-3 weeks you will start to see new seeds germinating. Depending on how bare your lawn is, it may take two seasons of renovation seeding before your lawn is thick and dense. Additionally, a lawn in need of renovation seeding also needs environmental changes to achieve a thick dense lawn. For example, trees may need to be trimmed or removed.
What if my lawn is excessively shady?
Areas with excessive shade or water will typically improve after seeding. However, a lack of water and other environmental conditions make it difficult for grass to survive long term. For best results, the environment should be improved or sometimes it is best to change the area to another use such as landscaping.
When should I mow if I’m seeding?
Mowing – mow the grass just before we do the seeding. Then stay off the mowing for 3 weeks (or as long as possible) so the new seedlings can start growing before they receive traffic.
How often should I water grass seed?
Watering – we recommend light and frequent watering after seeding so the seed can establish. Perform approximately 10 minutes of watering two times daily – morning and evening. Even better would be 5 minutes every 6 hours throughout the day. All irrigation systems are different, so these are just general guidelines.
Can I go on my newly seeded lawn?
Traffic – try to stay off the lawn as much as possible for the first 6 weeks after seeding. If you will be on the lawn, try to spread out the traffic so each area receives the least amount possible.
