Bee Lawn FAQs
What is a bee lawn?
A bee lawn is a mix of grass and low-growing flowering plants, like clover, that provide food for pollinators while still providing ground cover like a traditional lawns. Bee lawns can either be planted to perform in this function or they can be regular lawns where weeds are no longer managed.
How often do you mow a bee lawn?
You can mow a bee lawn like a regular lawn. Often times mowing is done at a higher height so that flowers can bloom.
Does a bee lawn require less water?
It depends on the look you are going for. Because of the diversity of plants in a bee lawn they often perform better under a wider range of watering practices. However, if you want a dense lawn, then bee lawns should be watered regularly.
Do I still need fertilizer with a bee lawn?
In order to maintain lawn density, fertilizer is still recommended for a bee lawn. In cases where clover has been specifically planted, it is possible to use less fertilizer than a traditional lawn.
Can I still get weed control if I have a bee lawn?
Blanket weed control, the spraying of the entire lawn, is not recommended with bee lawns, because doing so will kill the flowering plants the pollinators forage on. However, spot treatment of invasive weeds, such as creeping charlie, can still be done in a bee lawn. For clients on a bee lawn program with bioLawn we do not use weed control as part of the program, but customers can request one time spot treatments for invasive weeds.
