Weed Control program
Lawn Weed Control
Weed control tailored for mown areas, effectively managing prevalent Midwest weeds like dandelions, clover, creeping charlie, wild violets, and crabgrass. Our practices consider product toxicity, weed type, time of year, and weed quantity. Using spot and blanket applications, we strategically target and control weeds.
Unmown Weed Control
If requested, our team can provide a weed control program for unmown, more native areas of your property. These areas are perfect for the weed control program, as fertilizer in these areas can cause excessive and unnecessary growth. The primary weed this program will target is invasive thistle, but it will control any broadleaf plants/weeds growing in these areas. This program will also control common weeds found in the lawn such as dandelion, clover, creeping charlie and wild violet.
seasonal applications
Early Spring Application (April – May):
The optimum time to prevent crabgrass, this application is a pre-emergent that kills crabgrass as it germinates. If dandelions have started to bloom, those will also be treated with this treatment. What to expect? This application does not yield immediate results as it is working in the soil, but when summer comes you will notice less crabgrass in your lawn. By controlling the crabgrass early in the year, we prevent it from showing up in the summer.
Late Spring Application (May – June):
The prime time to control broadleaf weeds, dandelions and creeping charlie, and any other weed that may be popping up. This application of weed control will do just that. What to expect? Warmer weather leads to quicker weed control after this application. If you have a lot of weeds, do not expect this single application to control them all. With bioLawn’s program, consistent applications will have the weed population wilting down throughout the year. If you happen to have trouble with grubs, at this time we also do preventative grub control applications.
Summer Application (June – August):
New weeds are popping and we aim to get them under control with this weed control treatment. We specifically select products that work better in the heat of the summer. What to expect? Weeds can be more difficult to control during the summer, so weeds are slower to die, but with occasional watering (or rainfall), these weeds will succumb to the application
Early Fall Application (August – September):
As the weather cools, it is a great time to control new weeds. We also control any new weeds that have shown up since the summer and retreat any stubborn weeds that persisted through the summer. What to expect? Weeds should curl and start to turn purple within 5-10 days after treatment. Fall is a great time to do aeration, and bioLawn performs that at this time.
What to expect – Year 1, Year 2 and beyond?
Most clients come to bioLawn when their lawn needs some love and attention. Of course, we can take care of your lawn if it is already in great shape.
Year 1
Our focus in year 1 is to jumpstart the weed control. You will see the number of weeds decrease with each application. While results occur after each application, the lawn does not go from 0 to 10 after one application. For example, if you have 50 weeds, after the first application that number will go down to 25 weeds, then after the next down to 10 weeds, then after the next down to 5. If you have creeping charlie or wild violets, it can take over a year of applications to get substantial control. Our goal is to make steady improvement through the first year.
Year 2
Weed control picks up where it left off in the fall and continues to make improvements. Weeds will continue to pop up during the second year as we work to break the annual cycle of weeds flowering, turning into seed and then germinating new weeds. Our repeated applications will knock out these new weeds. By the end of the year, there should only be a few sporadic weeds in the lawn.
Beyond
The lawn should only have a few weeds. Weeds will continue to pop up as seeds are blown in from the wind or brought in from animals. Our regular applications will treat these weeds soon after they germinate and will keep your lawn with few weeds.
